14th Oxford Stuttering and Cluttering Research Conference Awards

Dave Rowley Award

Dave Rowley served as Oxford Dysfluency Conference Chair and Co-Chair for many years before he passed away in 2015. Dave had many professional values, and one of them was international collaboration. He valued and encouraged new research, the creation of clinical and learning initiatives in under-resourced or developing countries, and collaborative working across countries and disciplines. The Dave Rowley Award for International Initiatives will be presented to an individual or international collaborative team that exemplifies Dave’s generous spirit, engaging fellowship, and international vision.

If you would like to nominate someone for this award, please note that they must be presenting or attending the 14th Oxford Stuttering and Cluttering Research conference. The award is open to any researcher, clinician or student attending the conference, presentations may be oral or poster. Please send nominations to: Sharonmillard@nhs.net by 15th August 2025.

The Lena Rustin Award

This award is sponsored by the Michael Palin Centre for Stammering to recognise the work and phenomenal pioneering achievements of Lena Rustin. Amongst many of her influences within the profession, Lena was committed to the need for research to inform clinical practice and for clinical practice to inform research.  In her pursuit of excellence in the profession and to bring the greatest clinicians and researchers together in the UK, Lena, along with Harry Purser and Chris Code founded the Oxford Dysfluency Conference. The conference has evolved over time, with the most recent change being that it is now known as the Oxford Stuttering and Cluttering Conference. Throughout, it has upheld and maintained the same primary objectives and standards of excellence that Lena established when the conference was first created in 1985.

This award is to recognise the contributions of an individual or organisation that has made a significant contribution to the continuation, development and high standards of the conference.  The conference organising committee will provide nominations to the Michael Palin Centre for Stammering, who will judge and present the award.

Travers Reid Award

Applications are invited for the Travers Reid Award.  This award is sponsored by the charity Action for Stammering Children and is made in honour and in memory of the co-founder and Life President, Travers Reid.

This award is open to any student whose research project was undertaken within the last three years on the subject of stuttering.  While research into stuttering in adults will be considered, priority will be given to projects focusing on stuttering in childhood. Applicants should have their abstract (either oral or poster) accepted for presentation at the 14th Oxford Stuttering and Cluttering Research Conference.  A letter of recommendation should be sent from the applicant’s supervisor to Sharon Millard at sharonmillard@nhs.net by 30th August 2025.

The nominations/nominees will be judged at the Conference by a committee convened by Action for Stammering Children, including representatives from the Scientific Committee, who will evaluate the strength and potential value of the research, as well as the standard of the presentation given at the Conference.  The award will be made at the closing ceremony.  The ability to present at the conference and attend the closing ceremony is a condition of applying. The recipient of the award will receive £300.
